COURSE CURRICULUM

The BFA Theatre Film Production concentration at Texas State University is a comprehensive 120-credit-hour program structured over four years to develop students into skilled filmmakers through a blend of theoretical knowledge and intensive practical training. In the freshman year, students build foundational skills in film production, acting, design, communication, and government, along with introductory theatre courses and participation in theatre activities. The sophomore year shifts toward more advanced film-focused coursework, including production, directing, and creative development classes, alongside general education subjects like history and creative arts, helping students strengthen both technical and analytical abilities. During the junior year, the program becomes more specialized, with a strong emphasis on film production electives, mathematics, philosophy, and intermediate-level film studies, allowing students to begin shaping their individual interests within filmmaking. By the senior year, students focus heavily on advanced production work and electives, completing higher-level projects while also finishing science and social science requirements, ensuring a well-rounded education. A major highlight of the program is its wide range of elective tracks, including directing, producing, cinematography, production design, post-production, and writing, enabling students to specialize in areas such as film directing, lighting design, editing, sound design, screenwriting, or visual effects. Additionally, general theatre and film production electives provide further opportunities to explore acting, stagecraft, and storytelling. Throughout the program, students engage in continuous hands-on learning, collaborative projects, and creative exploration, preparing them for diverse careers in film, television, digital media, and related creative industries while equipping them with both technical expertise and artistic vision.
