COURSE CURRICULUM

At Texas State University, the Studio Art B.F.A. ceramics sequence is designed to progressively develop students from foundational skills to advanced artistic practice and professional-level work in clay. In Beginning Ceramics (ARTS 2311), students are introduced to clay as a creative medium while learning essential techniques such as hand-building, surface design, and kiln firing processes, along with basic conceptual development. In Intermediate Ceramics (ARTS 3312), students expand their technical abilities by working with wheel throwing, glaze formulation, and deeper exploration of studio practice, while also strengthening their critical understanding of ceramic art. Advanced Ceramics (ARTS 3314) allows students to develop a personal artistic direction, emphasizing experimentation, research, and advanced production techniques while connecting their work to historical and contemporary ceramic traditions; this course can be repeated for additional credit to support continued artistic growth. Finally, Issues in Ceramics (ARTS 4315) focuses on contemporary debates and innovations in the field, encouraging students to engage with specialized topics such as figurative sculpture, mold-making, digital design applications, and printing techniques in ceramics, and it is also repeatable for deeper exploration. Together, these courses provide a structured pathway from technical foundations to independent artistic identity, preparing students for professional careers as ceramic artists or further study in the visual arts.
