COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor’s degree in Photography at Texas State University follows a structured four-year plan totaling 120 credit hours, combining studio art, photography specialization, and general education coursework. In the freshman year, students build a strong foundation through introductory art and design courses such as ART 1301, ART 1303, and ARTS 1303/1304, along with art history courses and basic communication requirements like English composition. They also begin developing technical and creative skills essential for photography while completing initial university requirements.During the sophomore year, students progress into more focused studio and art history courses, including ARTS 2301, ARTS 3365, and ARTH 3306, while continuing general education subjects such as mathematics and American history. This year introduces deeper exploration of visual concepts and artistic techniques, along with a required 4D art elective that expands creative practice into time-based or digital media.In the junior year, the curriculum becomes more specialized and intensive, with advanced photography and studio courses like ARTS 3367 and ARTS 4360. Students also complete government, science, and social science requirements, alongside 2D and 3D studio art electives that broaden their artistic range. Open electives allow flexibility, although they must be outside art-related subjects, ensuring interdisciplinary exposure.The senior year focuses on advanced, capstone-level coursework and professional preparation. Students complete key courses such as ARTS 4361 and ARTS 4200 together, followed by ARTS 4000 and ARTS 4367 in the final semester, which are critical for portfolio development and final evaluation. Additional art electives, open electives, and remaining core requirements like political science and philosophy are also completed.
