COURSE CURRICULUM

The Musical Theatre program at Texas State University offers a structured and intensive three-year progression within a four-year framework, focusing on developing students’ skills in acting, singing, and dance. In the freshman year, students build a strong foundation through courses in musical theatre performance, acting, and song interpretation, alongside training in jazz, ballet, musicianship, and vocal techniques. They also participate in theatre activities, gaining early stage exposure and practical experience. The sophomore year expands on these fundamentals with more advanced coursework in musical theatre creation, performance-based musicianship, and specialized dance forms such as tap and musical theatre dance. Students also receive private voice training, study acting realism, and begin exploring theatre design and musical theatre history, helping them understand both performance and production elements. By the junior year, the program emphasizes refinement and professional preparation, including characterization, advanced dance training, audition techniques, and continued voice development. Students also study theatre history and speech, further strengthening their performance versatility and communication skills. Elective options allow for additional specialization, particularly in dance or performance areas of interest.
