COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in Writing and Rhetoric requires 120 credit hours and combines general education with specialized training in professional and technical communication. In the freshman year, students complete foundational courses such as English composition, mathematics, science, government, history, modern language, and a university seminar. The sophomore year builds on this base with literature courses, creative arts, social and behavioral sciences, and the required ENG 3301 course, along with minor and language requirements. During the junior year, students begin focusing more on writing and rhetoric by taking courses such as Approaches to Writing and Rhetoric and selecting from writing-focused options like technical writing, document design, or editing, alongside advanced English electives and minor courses. In the senior year, students complete additional writing and rhetoric courses, advanced English electives, minor requirements, and general electives to fulfill the degree. Students must complete two early literature courses and a total of seven advanced English courses, including at least one 4000-level course. They are also required to take at least one advanced course from three of the four non-writing groups, including British Literature, US Literature, Global Literatures, and Media or Genre Studies. In addition, nine hours must be completed in writing and rhetoric, including courses in theory, such as ENG 3318, and practice-based courses like technical writing, document design, or editing, with flexibility to choose additional courses in either category. One elective course can be selected from any group, and one course must focus on a single author, typically taken near the end of the program. Overall, the program emphasizes both analytical understanding and practical writing skills, preparing students for careers in professional communication, editing, media, and related fields.
