COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics at Texas State University is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in mathematical theory while also integrating a broad liberal arts education. The program begins with core general education requirements that include communication, mathematics, government, history, science, and social sciences. These foundational courses help students build essential skills in critical thinking, writing, and analytical reasoning, which are necessary for success in advanced mathematics and related fields.In the freshman year, students take introductory and advanced calculus courses such as MATH 2471 and MATH 2472, along with communication and general education courses. These early mathematics courses establish a strong base in calculus and prepare students for more advanced topics. Students are also introduced to university-level academic expectations through US 1100 if required.During the sophomore year, students continue with higher-level mathematics such as linear algebra, differential equations, and mathematical structures. They also begin studying computer science fundamentals through CS 1428, which introduces programming and computational thinking. At this stage, students also start or continue a modern language sequence, which is a key requirement of the Bachelor of Arts degree, along with selecting a minor that complements their academic interests.In the junior year, students progress into advanced mathematics courses such as probability, discrete mathematics, and mathematical modeling. They also continue completing modern language requirements and minor coursework. These studies help students develop deeper analytical and abstract reasoning skills while expanding their interdisciplinary knowledge.In the senior year, students take advanced mathematics electives and upper-level theoretical courses such as algebra, analysis, and numerical methods. They also complete remaining minor and elective requirements. Overall, the program emphasizes both mathematical depth and broad academic exposure, preparing students for careers in education, data science, research, finance, technology, and graduate study in mathematics or related fields.
