The Bachelor of Arts in Geography degree plan at Texas State University is designed to provide a balanced progression from general education foundations to specialized knowledge in human geography and regional studies over four years, ensuring that students develop both academic breadth and focused expertise. In the freshman year, the curriculum emphasizes core subjects such as communication, mathematics, science, history, and government, which build essential skills in writing, analytical thinking, and civic understanding. At the same time, introductory Geography courses like GEO 1309 or GEO 1310 and GEO 2301 introduce students to fundamental geographic concepts, while GEO 2110 provides a laboratory experience that begins to develop practical and observational skills.In the sophomore year, students continue completing general education requirements but begin transitioning into more specialized Geography coursework. Courses like GEO 3301 (Research Methods) and options such as GEO 2426, GEO 3411, GEO 3416, or GEO 4430 introduce students to important tools and techniques, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), mapping, and spatial analysis. This stage also includes the continuation of modern language study, which is a key requirement for the B.A. degree and enhances students’ global perspective and communication abilities.By the junior year, the program becomes more focused on human geography and regional studies. Students take core human geography courses and a required regional geography course, allowing them to explore how human activities, cultures, and environments interact across different parts of the world. Additional English literature and advanced language courses further strengthen critical thinking and communication skills. At the same time, students make significant progress in their chosen minor, which adds an interdisciplinary dimension to their education.In the senior year, students complete advanced human geography courses, electives, and remaining minor requirements. This final phase allows them to deepen their specialization and prepare for careers or graduate studies. Overall, the program combines theoretical knowledge, technical skills, language proficiency, and interdisciplinary learning, making graduates well-prepared for careers in urban planning, policy analysis, international development, and other geography-related fields.
