COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in History at Texas State University requires students to complete a total of 33 credit hours in history, providing a balanced and comprehensive understanding of global, European, and United States history. The program begins with foundational courses such as History 1310 and 1320, which cover the History of the United States, ensuring students gain essential knowledge of national development and key historical events. Students must also complete either History 2310 (Western Civilization to 1715) or History 2311 (World Civilization to the 17th Century), along with either History 2320 (Western Civilization since 1715) or History 2312 (World Civilization from the 17th Century). These courses build a strong global and cultural perspective by examining major civilizations, historical transformations, and global interactions over time.In addition to these core courses, students are required to complete 18 hours of advanced history coursework at the 3000–4000 level. These advanced courses are structured to ensure academic breadth and depth, requiring at least one course from each of three categories: Group A (World History), Group B (European History), and Group C (U.S. History). The remaining nine hours can be selected from any of these groups, but students are limited to no more than three courses within a single group to maintain a diverse academic experience. This structure encourages students to explore different regions and perspectives while still allowing flexibility based on personal interests.The program concludes with History 4399, the Senior Seminar, which serves as a capstone course. In this seminar, students engage in advanced research, critical analysis, and academic writing, applying the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout the program. Overall, this degree prepares students for careers in education, research, public service, law, and other fields that require strong analytical, communication, and critical thinking abilities.
