COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in English program requires a total of 120 credit hours and is structured across four academic years to provide a balanced foundation in general education and specialized English studies. In the freshman year, students focus on core subjects such as introductory English composition, mathematics, government, history, science, and modern language courses, along with a university seminar. The sophomore year builds on this foundation by introducing literature courses, creative arts, social sciences, and intermediate English studies, while also continuing language and minor requirements. During the junior year, students shift more toward advanced English coursework, selecting electives from specialized groups, completing minor courses, and taking additional electives as needed. In the senior year, the emphasis is on advanced English electives, including higher-level courses, along with completing minor and general elective requirements. A key requirement is ENG 3301, which students are advised to take after completing sophomore literature courses. Students must also complete early literature courses and a total of seven advanced English courses, including at least one 4000-level course. These advanced courses must be selected from different groups such as British Literature, US Literature, Global Literatures, Media and Visual Studies, and Writing Studies and Practice, ensuring a broad and diverse academic experience. Additionally, students must take a course focused on a single author, typically toward the end of the program. The curriculum also emphasizes flexibility, allowing students to choose electives based on their interests while ensuring coverage across multiple areas. Overall, the program is designed to develop strong analytical, writing, and critical thinking skills through a combination of foundational courses, specialized study, and interdisciplinary learning.
