COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in Film requires 120 credit hours and combines general education with specialized study in film and media. In the freshman year, students complete foundational courses such as English composition, mathematics, science, government, history, modern language, and a university seminar. The sophomore year builds on this base with literature courses, creative arts, social and behavioral sciences, and intermediate English studies, along with minor and language requirements. During the junior year, students begin focusing more on film studies by taking courses such as Introduction to the Study of Film along with advanced English and film-related electives, minor courses, and general electives. In the senior year, students complete additional advanced English and film courses, minor requirements, and electives, preparing for the final stage of the program. A key requirement is ENG 3301, which should be taken after completing sophomore literature courses. Students must also complete two early literature courses and a total of seven advanced English courses, including at least one 4000-level course. For the film concentration, students are required to complete at least nine hours in film studies, including ENG 3307 and other advanced film courses such as film theory, adaptation, or production. Additionally, students must take at least one advanced course from three of the four non-film groups, including British Literature, US Literature, Global Literatures, and Writing Studies. They also select one elective from any group and complete a course focused on a single author, typically toward the end of the program. The degree culminates in a Senior Seminar in Film, which integrates film analysis, production, and screenwriting, allowing students to apply both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in a comprehensive final project. Overall, the program balances critical analysis with creative and technical training in film and media.
