COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in Creative Writing requires a total of 120 credit hours and is structured to combine general education with specialized writing and literature courses. In the freshman year, students complete foundational subjects such as English composition, mathematics, science, government, history, modern language, and a university seminar. The sophomore year continues with core requirements, including literature courses, creative arts, social sciences, and intermediate English studies, along with minor and language courses. During the junior year, the program becomes more focused on creative writing, where students take courses such as Introduction to Creative Writing and begin workshop-based classes in fiction or poetry, along with advanced English electives and minor courses. In the senior year, students complete higher-level English electives, minor requirements, and specialized creative writing courses, culminating in a Senior Seminar in either Fiction Writing or Poetry Writing. A key requirement of the program is ENG 3301, which should be taken after completing sophomore literature courses. Students must also complete two early literature courses and a total of seven advanced English courses. These include at least one course from three of the four non-writing groups such as British Literature, US Literature, Global Literatures, and Media or Genre Studies. Additionally, students must complete specific writing courses from the writing studies group, including Introduction to Creative Writing and either the fiction or poetry track, which consists of intermediate and advanced workshop courses. One elective course can be chosen from any group, and one course must focus on a single author, usually taken toward the end of the program. Overall, the curriculum balances critical study with creative practice, helping students develop strong writing, analytical, and expressive skills for careers in writing, publishing, media, and related fields.
