COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Economics is a 120-credit-hour degree program designed to provide students with a strong foundation in economic theory, quantitative analysis, and liberal arts education. In addition to completing the general education core curriculum, students must fulfill BA-specific requirements, including three additional hours of English literature, six hours of 2000-level modern language coursework, and a minor from an approved field of study. Students are also required to complete an additional 3-credit-hour course from an approved list of disciplines such as anthropology (biological anthropology only), biology, chemistry, computer science, geography (physical geography only), mathematics, philosophy (logic only), or physics, ensuring broader scientific and analytical exposure beyond the core curriculum. The program emphasizes academic rigor, requiring a minimum of 36 advanced (3000- or 4000-level) hours and nine hours of writing-intensive coursework completed at Texas State University. Eligibility for the major requires students to be in good academic standing, and graduation requires a minimum Texas State GPA of 2.00, a major GPA of 2.25, and a minor GPA of 2.00.The curriculum includes core economics courses such as ECO 2314 (Principles of Microeconomics) and ECO 2315 (Principles of Macroeconomics), along with supporting quantitative coursework like MATH 1329 and business statistics. Students progress through structured coursework in economics, mathematics, history, communication, and modern languages while also completing a minor to develop interdisciplinary knowledge. Upper-level study includes advanced economics courses (ECO 3314, ECO 3315, and electives) that build analytical and policy-related skills. The program also integrates electives and supporting coursework in business, science, or mathematics to enhance critical thinking and data analysis abilities. Overall, the BA in Economics prepares students for careers in business, government, research, and policy, as well as for graduate study, by combining strong quantitative training with broad liberal arts education and real-world analytical skills.
