COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies is a structured 120-credit degree designed to develop strong communication, analytical, and critical thinking skills while ensuring a broad liberal arts education. In the freshman year, students complete foundational coursework in English composition, government and political science, mathematics, social sciences, and introductory communication courses such as COMM 1310, COMM 2315, and COMM 2338. These courses build essential skills in speaking, writing, and understanding human interaction. Students also complete general education requirements and begin fulfilling institutional requirements such as US 1100 for first-time college students. In the sophomore year, the curriculum expands into more advanced general education areas, including literature, life and physical sciences, history, philosophy, and modern language study, typically at the 1410 and 1420 levels. Students also begin intermediate communication coursework such as COMM 2330, which strengthens their understanding of applied communication contexts. The junior year focuses more heavily on the major itself, with advanced core courses COMM 3301 and COMM 3302, along with communication electives that allow specialization in areas of interest. Students also complete additional requirements such as upper-level literature, a computer science or science-related course, and a chosen minor, which broadens their academic and professional preparation. Modern language study continues at the 2310 level. In the senior year, students take advanced communication electives that deepen theoretical and applied knowledge, while also completing remaining minor requirements and free electives to reach graduation requirements. The program ensures students graduate with a balanced education in communication theory, practical skills, and interdisciplinary knowledge, preparing them for careers in media, business, public relations, education, law, and other fields that require strong interpersonal and professional communication abilities.
