COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Environmental Engineering program offers both thesis and non-thesis options, each requiring the completion of 30 credit hours and providing flexibility based on students’ academic and professional goals. In both tracks, students must complete a set of core courses covering fundamental environmental engineering areas such as water quality, air pollution, and environmental systems. If a student has already taken similar courses at the undergraduate level, they are required to enroll in more advanced, higher-level courses in those areas to ensure continued academic progression and depth of knowledge. In addition to core coursework, students must complete a cohesive set of elective courses approved by their academic advisor, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests and career paths. All full-time students are also expected to participate annually in faculty and student seminar series, which foster academic engagement, professional development, and exposure to current research and industry practices.For students pursuing the thesis option, the program includes 6 credits of CEE 997 Master’s Thesis, during which they conduct independent research under faculty supervision. This culminates in a formal thesis defense before a committee, making it particularly suitable for those interested in research or further doctoral studies. The non-thesis option focuses more on coursework and practical application and requires students to complete a zero-credit CEE 995 Master’s Exit Paper. This paper must address a topic related to the student’s area of specialization, be approved by the advisor, and have a minimum length of 2000 words, demonstrating the student’s ability to analyze and apply environmental engineering concepts.Overall, the program combines rigorous coursework, flexibility, and opportunities for research or applied learning, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to address complex environmental challenges and pursue careers in engineering, consulting, research, and sustainability-focused industries.
