ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Syracuse University is a private research university located in Syracuse, New York, founded in 1870 with historical ties to the Methodist Episcopal Church, though it became nonsectarian in 1920. Situated on University Hill, the campus is known for its diverse architectural styles, ranging from Romanesque Revival to modern designs. The university is academically structured into 13 schools and colleges and is recognized as an R1 institution, indicating very high research activity. Its athletic teams, known as the Orange, compete in NCAA Division I sports as part of the Atlantic Coast Conference, with a few exceptions. The university has a distinguished community of alumni and affiliates, including prominent figures such as Joe Biden, along with Olympic medalists and award-winning artists.The origins of the university trace back to the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, established in 1831 in Lima, New York. Efforts to expand it into Genesee College faced challenges due to its location and changing transportation routes. Meanwhile, the city of Syracuse was actively seeking to establish a university. After years of negotiations and disputes involving church leaders, cities, and figures like Ezra Cornell, a new institution was officially chartered on March 24, 1870, independent of Genesee College. Financial support came from the Methodist Church and the city of Syracuse, along with contributions from key individuals such as Jesse T. Peck.Syracuse University opened in 1871 and was founded on progressive principles, offering equal opportunities regardless of gender or race. It was coeducational from the beginning, with men and women studying together and participating in shared academic and extracurricular activities. This inclusive approach helped establish the university as a forward-thinking institution during its time.
