Efforts to expand it into Genesee College faced challenges due to its location and changing transportation routes. Meanwhile, the city of Syracuse was actively seeking to establish a university. After years of negotiations and disputes involving church leaders, cities, and figures like Ezra Cornell, a new institution was officially chartered on March 24, 1870, independent of Genesee College. Financial support came from the Methodist Church and the city of Syracuse, along with contributions from key individuals such as Jesse T. Peck.Syracuse University opened in 1871 and was founded on progressive principles, offering equal opportunities regardless of gender or race. It was coeducational from the beginning, with men and women studying together and participating in shared academic and extracurricular activities. This inclusive approach helped establish the university as a forward-thinking institution during its time.
