COURSE CURRICULUM

Saint Louis University’s Master of Science in Computer Science is a 33-credit program designed to build strong foundational and specialized knowledge over two years. In the first year, the fall semester includes three courses totaling 9 credits: CSCI 5030 Principles of Software Development, a critical course that introduces core software development concepts; CSCI 5050 Computing and Society, which explores the social implications of computing; and a theory elective from courses numbered CSCI 5100-5199, focusing on theoretical foundations of computer science. In the spring semester, students take three more courses, also totaling 9 credits: a software engineering elective (CSCI 5300-5399), a systems elective (CSCI 5500-5599), and a breadth or general elective, allowing for exploration of diverse topics to broaden their skill set. The second year focuses more on electives to deepen knowledge in specific areas, with the fall semester consisting of 9 credits of breadth or general electives, and the spring semester completing the program with 6 credits of similar electives. This flexible structure enables students to tailor their education according to personal interests and career goals while maintaining a strong foundation in software development, theory, and systems. The program balances theoretical and practical learning, preparing graduates for careers in software engineering, data science, cybersecurity, and other computer science-related fields. Through a combination of core courses and electives, SLU’s Computer Science M.S. program equips students with the technical skills, ethical understanding, and adaptability required in today’s evolving technology landscape.
