COURSE CURRICULUM

Saint Louis University’s Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering is a 30-credit program designed to provide a comprehensive blend of foundational coursework, research experience, and technical communication skills over two years. In the first year, the fall semester consists of 8 credits, including a foundational biomedical engineering class (3 credits), either another foundational or elective class (3 credits), and BME 5010 Research Analysis (2 credits), along with participation in the BME Seminar. This semester builds core knowledge and research skills essential for success in the field. In the spring semester, students take 9 credits, including a foundational or elective course (3 credits) and two elective courses (6 credits), alongside continuing seminar involvement, allowing for deeper exploration of specialized topics within biomedical engineering. During the summer, students prepare their Master’s Thesis Proposal, which is a critical milestone in their research journey, although it carries no credit. The second year focuses heavily on research and thesis work. In the fall semester, students take 6 credits of elective courses and enroll in BME 5990 Thesis Research (1 credit), integrating coursework with hands-on investigation. The final spring semester includes BME 5040 Technical Communication in the Discipline (1 credit), which enhances students’ ability to effectively communicate complex scientific information, and 5 credits of thesis research through BME 5990. The program culminates with the final defense of the master’s thesis, completing the degree requirements. This curriculum balances coursework, research, and communication training, equipping students with the skills needed for innovation and leadership in biomedical engineering fields, while fostering collaboration through seminars and industry engagement.
