COURSE CURRICULUM

Saint Louis University’s Master of Science in Medical Sciences program is a comprehensive 30-credit curriculum designed to prepare students for admission to medical school or other health profession programs by providing a rigorous and medically focused course of study. The program begins in the summer semester with two courses: ANAT 5010 Human Gross Anatomy (5 credits) and MED 5100 Molecular Foundations in Medicine (2 credits). These foundational courses introduce students to the structure of the human body and the molecular basis of medicine, setting the stage for more advanced study. The fall semester is the most intensive, with students completing five courses totaling 14 credits. These include ANAT 5100 Human Histology and Ultrastructure (5 credits), which focuses on microscopic tissue structures; ANAT 5200 Human Embryology (2 credits), covering human development; ANAT 5400 Human Systems Physiology (4 credits), exploring the function of human organ systems; MED 5110 Epidemiology and Biostatistics (1 credit), providing essential skills for understanding medical research data; and MED 5140 Introduction to Pathology (2 credits), which offers insight into disease mechanisms. The spring semester includes ANAT 5300 Human Systems Neurobiology (5 credits), deepening students’ knowledge of the nervous system; MED 5150 Principles of Immunology (1 credit), focusing on the immune system’s role in health and disease; and MED 5960 Master’s Capstone (3 credits), a culminating project that integrates and applies knowledge gained throughout the program. This capstone encourages critical thinking and practical application of medical sciences. Throughout the program, students engage in coursework alongside SLU medical students, enhancing their learning experience and familiarity with medical school rigor. The program also offers dedicated academic advising and learning support aimed at strengthening medical school applications. By combining a solid foundation in medical sciences with hands-on learning and academic guidance, the program equips students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in competitive health professional programs.
