COURSE CURRICULUM

Saint Louis University’s Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science follows a detailed four-year plan of study totaling 125–126 credits, integrating foundational sciences, core curriculum, and specialized medical laboratory training. In the first year, students build essential knowledge through critical biology and chemistry courses with labs, alongside pre-calculus, statistics, English rhetoric, and introductory medical laboratory science classes, such as The Power of Laboratory Medicine and Foundations of Medical Laboratory Science Lab. The second year focuses on advanced sciences, including biochemistry, organic chemistry, and human physiology, as well as courses in public speaking and philosophy. Students also begin specialized lab coursework in urinalysis, body fluids, and molecular biology techniques, supported by core electives in theology, creative expression, and social sciences. The third year deepens clinical and diagnostic expertise with critical courses in medical biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, immunohematology, and analytical chemistry, alongside practical lab components. Students gain hands-on experience in bacteriology, urinalysis, and immunohematology laboratories. In the fourth year, students take advanced courses in hematology, laboratory management, medical mycology, and parasitology, along with a research methods course. The final semester is dedicated to intensive clinical practicum experiences across multiple disciplines, including clinical chemistry, hematology, phlebotomy, immunohematology, microbiology, and urinalysis. These are paired with corresponding lectures to reinforce practical skills and theoretical understanding. An advanced topics course provides case correlations, encouraging application of knowledge in clinical decision-making. This structured and rigorous curriculum prepares students to become certified medical laboratory professionals who play a crucial role in healthcare through accurate testing and diagnostics, essential for early detection, monitoring, and treatment of diseases.
