COURSE CURRICULUM

To complete the African American Studies major at Saint Louis University, students are required to earn a total of 30 credits. This includes five core courses that introduce the goals of the Department of African American Studies and help students gain a deeper understanding of the African diaspora, its impact, and its dynamics within contemporary African American communities. The courses in the major intersect with various academic disciplines and are taught within the department, along with cross-listed courses offered in collaboration with other academic departments. These cross-listed courses can also fulfill the University’s undergraduate core requirements when taken for African American Studies credit. The interdisciplinary nature of the program allows students to develop new perspectives on issues related to race, identity, and culture, enriching their scholarly pursuits.
