COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Hospitality and Tourism Management at St. Joseph's University, New York includes a well-structured curriculum that combines core academic requirements, major-specific courses, and specialized concentrations. Students must first complete core courses as outlined in the university’s Core Curriculum Guide, ensuring a strong academic foundation. In addition, there are 15 credits of required courses that include Writing for Effective Communication, either Introduction to Ethics or Ethics and Business, and a choice between Macroeconomics or Microeconomics. Students must also complete a mathematics course such as College Algebra or Elementary Functions: Precalculus, along with Introduction to Human Communication. Communication for Professionals is required as an elective course to strengthen workplace communication skills.The major requirements consist of 24 credits focused on building practical and professional competencies. These include Business Law I, Human Resources Management, and either Computer Applications I or Business Systems and Design. Students also complete Marketing, Program Planning and Leadership Skills, and Facility Planning and Management of Sport, Recreation, and Fitness Settings. Specialized hospitality knowledge is developed through courses such as Hospitality Management and Hospitality Finance.Students then choose one of three concentrations—Tourism, Hotel Management, or Health Care Hospitality—each requiring 12 additional credits. The Tourism concentration includes courses in leisure services, commercial recreation, sustainable tourism, and an internship. The Health Care Hospitality track focuses on health care systems, management, legal aspects, and includes an internship. The Hotel Management concentration covers hotel operations, facilities management, conference and event planning, along with an internship. Across all concentrations, the internship component is essential, providing hands-on experience and preparing students for careers in their chosen field within the hospitality and tourism industry.
