COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice at St. Joseph's University, New York includes a structured set of core and required courses designed to prepare students for careers in the criminal justice field. As part of the core preparation, all majors must complete courses such as BIO 225, Introduction to Ethics, either Sociology or Social Problems, Political Science (required for land-based students), and Introduction to Psychology. These foundational courses should be selected in consultation with the Criminal Justice Associate Chairperson, and students must maintain a minimum grade of C. Additionally, no more than 15 credits may be transferred toward the major.The program also requires 31 credits of major-specific coursework that provides comprehensive knowledge of the criminal justice system. Students begin with Introduction to Criminal Justice and progress through key areas such as Corrections, Criminal Courts, and Law Enforcement and Policing. Courses like Criminal Procedure and Race, Class and Gender in Criminal Justice help students understand legal processes and social issues within the justice system.Students also develop analytical and practical skills through Research Methods in Criminal Justice and gain real-world experience through an Internship in Criminal Justice. The program culminates in the Capstone Seminar in Criminal Justice, where students integrate their knowledge and apply it to complex issues in the field. Additionally, Criminology provides theoretical insights into crime and its causes. Overall, the curriculum combines theory, practical experience, and interdisciplinary learning to prepare students for careers in law enforcement, legal services, corrections, and related fields.
