COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at Brooklyn provides students with a comprehensive understanding of human behavior, social institutions, and the forces that shape communities and societies. The program requires 36 credits in sociology, including 15 credits of required courses that establish a strong foundation in sociological theory, research methods, and applied analysis. Students begin with SOC 100, Introductory Sociology, which introduces the fundamental concepts, perspectives, and areas of study within the discipline. SOC 347, Sociological Theory, engages students with classical and contemporary theories, helping them interpret social behavior and understand patterns of human interaction. SOC 348, Research Methods, equips students with essential skills in designing and conducting sociological research, collecting and analyzing data, and drawing evidence-based conclusions. SOC 400, Seminar in Sociology, serves as a capstone course, emphasizing critical thinking, independent research, and professional communication by integrating knowledge from previous coursework into applied projects. Additionally, ECO 222, Statistics, provides quantitative and analytical skills necessary for evaluating social data and conducting rigorous research. Beyond the required courses, students complete 21 credits of electives, allowing them to explore specialized areas such as social inequality, globalization, urban studies, criminology, health and aging, and environmental sociology, enabling a personalized course of study tailored to individual interests and career goals. Students may transfer up to 15 credits toward the major and must maintain a minimum departmental index of C. Through a combination of theoretical coursework, research training, and applied experiences, the Brooklyn sociology program prepares graduates for diverse careers in social services, public policy, research, community advocacy, education, and nonprofit organizations, while also providing a solid foundation for graduate studies.
