COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Brooklyn provides students with a rigorous foundation in the study of government, public policy, and political theory, preparing them for careers in public service, law, research, and advocacy, as well as for graduate studies. The program requires 36 credits in political science, including foundational courses such as POL 102, Introduction to Political Science, which introduces students to political concepts, institutions, and analytical frameworks, and POL 103, American Government and Politics, which examines the structure, functions, and processes of U.S. government. POL 205, Comparative Governments, expands students’ understanding of political systems around the world, highlighting differences in governance, policy, and citizen engagement, while POL 215, International Relations, Law and Organization, explores global politics, international law, and the role of organizations in maintaining global stability. POL 348, Research Methods, is a required course for all majors, including double majors, and equips students with essential skills in political research, data analysis, and the design and execution of empirical studies. Students also choose between POL 351, History of Political Thought, or POL 353, American Political Theory, to deepen their understanding of the intellectual foundations of political systems and ideas. The program culminates with POL 400, Seminar in Political Science, a capstone course that emphasizes critical thinking, applied research, and professional communication, allowing students to synthesize knowledge from previous courses and engage in independent or guided research projects. Students may transfer up to 15 credits toward the major and are required to maintain a minimum departmental index of C. Through a combination of theoretical coursework, practical research training, and exposure to domestic and international political systems, the Brooklyn Political Science program equips graduates with the analytical, ethical, and communication skills necessary to succeed in competitive political, legal, and policy-oriented careers while contributing meaningfully to society.
