COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and New Media Studies at Brooklyn provides students with a rigorous foundation in journalism, media theory, and digital communication, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience to prepare graduates for careers in media, public relations, corporate communications, and government. The program requires 24 credits of core courses, beginning with JNM 108, Introduction to Journalism, which teaches the fundamentals of reporting, writing, and ethical practices. Students enhance their writing skills in either JNM 110, Journalism Workshop: The Art of the Essay, or ENG 125, Feature Writing for Online and Print Magazines, developing expertise in diverse journalistic formats. To build technical proficiency, students choose one applied media course such as ART 165, Graphic Design I, ART 269, Digital Photography, ART 277, Web Design, or COM 205, Multimedia Applications. JNM 200, History of Media, or JNM 205, Media and Society, explores the evolution of media and its social, cultural, and political impact. JNM 210, Introduction to Video & Multimedia Production, teaches students to create engaging content across digital platforms, while JNM 240, The Business of Media, covers the financial and organizational aspects of media industries. The program culminates in JNM 411, Senior Thesis, where students conduct in-depth research or creative projects, and JNM 435, Supervised Internship, which provides professional experience in real-world media settings. In addition to required courses, students complete 12 credits of electives, selecting from specialized topics such as social media theory and practice, data-driven journalism, reporting on arts, business, science, or environmental issues, and web design workshops, allowing for tailored academic and professional development. By integrating critical thinking, technical skill, and professional practice, the Brooklyn Journalism and New Media Studies program equips students to produce accurate, engaging, and impactful content, prepare portfolios and résumés, and succeed in a rapidly evolving media landscape. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in journalism, digital media, social media management, content creation, and communications, as well as for graduate studies in related fields.
