ABOUT UNIVERSITY

St. Joseph’s University (SJU), also known as St. Joe’s or SJNY, is a private Catholic university in New York State, United States, with campuses in Brooklyn and Long Island. It offers undergraduate and graduate education across more than 54 majors and programs. The university was originally founded as St. Joseph’s College for Women by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood under Mother Mary Louis to provide higher education for young women. It received its provisional charter in 1916 and moved to its current Brooklyn location at 245 Clinton Avenue in 1918. The first baccalaureate degrees were awarded in 1920, and the college gained full accreditation in 1928. Over the years, it added facilities such as the Dillon Child Study Center in 1934 and McEntegart Hall in 1965.In 1970, the college was renamed St. Joseph’s College and began admitting male students. In 1971, an extension program opened in Brentwood, evolving into a full Suffolk County branch campus by 1978, which moved to a 25-acre campus in Patchogue in 1979. The Long Island campus now features facilities such as the Clare Rose Playhouse, Callahan Library, John A. Danzi Athletic Center, Business Technology Center, and a 24.8-acre outdoor athletic facility. The Brooklyn campus has expanded with a five-story brownstone for faculty offices and St. Angela Hall Academy for classrooms.On April 2022, the New York Board of Regents approved changing the name from St. Joseph’s College to St. Joseph’s University, reflecting its growth into a full university with multiple campuses, expanded academic offerings, and modern facilities. The institution remains committed to its Catholic heritage while providing diverse educational opportunities across both Brooklyn and Long Island, supporting students’ academic, professional, and personal development.
