COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in Environmental Science with a concentration in Emergency and Disaster Management at SEMO is a 32-hour graduate program designed for students interested in understanding and managing environmental risks, disasters, and large-scale emergencies. The program integrates environmental science with public safety, policy, and geographic information systems (GIS), preparing students to respond effectively to natural and human-made hazards. Core courses focus on disaster preparedness, emergency planning, risk reduction, vulnerability analysis, and critical incident management, giving students a strong foundation in how emergencies are anticipated, managed, and mitigated in real-world settings.Students also develop advanced technical skills through GIS-based courses such as Advanced Geographic Information Science and GIS Planning for Emergency Management, which are essential tools for mapping hazards, analyzing risk patterns, and supporting decision-making during emergencies. These skills are combined with training in risk assessment applications, allowing students to evaluate environmental threats and design strategies to reduce their impact on communities.In addition to core requirements, students choose elective courses from areas such as wildlife disease, experimental design, trauma-informed practice, public administration, nonprofit management, and government budgeting. This flexibility allows students to shape their degree toward interests in environmental policy, public safety administration, or scientific research. A research or internship component further enhances practical experience, giving students opportunities to work directly in environmental agencies, emergency management organizations, or related professional settings.Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in emergency management agencies, environmental consulting, public safety organizations, government departments, and nonprofit sectors, while also providing a strong foundation for leadership roles in disaster preparedness, risk reduction, and environmental resilience planning.
