COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Cybersecurity at Southeast Missouri State University is an advanced graduate program designed to develop expertise in protecting digital systems, networks, and critical infrastructure from modern cyber threats. The curriculum begins with core courses in introduction to cybersecurity, information security and assurance, system administration security, network security and defense, and advanced computer forensics, providing a strong foundation in both offensive and defensive cybersecurity practices. Students then choose between a thesis and non-thesis pathway depending on their career goals. The thesis option includes research methods in cybersecurity and a multi-semester thesis project, along with an oral examination, while the non-thesis option focuses on applied learning through a graduate project and a comprehensive exam. Both tracks require students to complete elective coursework in advanced cybersecurity and related fields, with options in areas such as cloud computing, web application security, cyber operations, ethical hacking, secure operating environments, risk and compliance, cryptography, networking, and mathematical foundations. Students may also engage in independent study or internships to gain real-world experience. Overall, the program prepares graduates for high-level careers in cybersecurity by combining technical training, research capability, and practical problem-solving skills needed to secure modern information systems and respond to evolving cyber threats.
