COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling at Southeast Missouri State University is a 60-hour graduate program designed to prepare students for professional practice as licensed counselors in a variety of mental health settings. The program provides a comprehensive foundation in counseling theory, ethical practice, human development, and clinical skills, while also emphasizing real-world application through supervised practicum and internship experiences. Students begin with core courses such as Counseling Orientation and Ethics, Developmental Theories, Counseling Theories, and Social and Cultural Aspects of Counseling, which build a strong understanding of professional standards, human behavior, and the social factors that influence mental health. Additional coursework in Counseling Skills, Career Development, Group Counseling, and Assessment in Counseling helps students develop essential techniques for working with individuals and groups across diverse populations.As students progress, they engage in more advanced clinical training through courses such as Crisis Intervention and Consultation, Foundations of Mental Health Counseling, Mental Health Systems and Prevention, Psychodiagnostics and Treatment, Marriage and Family Counseling, and Addictions Counseling. These courses prepare students to assess, diagnose, and support clients experiencing a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and psychological challenges. A significant portion of the program is dedicated to experiential learning, including a counseling practicum and multiple internship experiences in mental health settings, where students work directly with clients under professional supervision to develop real-world counseling competence.The program also includes training in research methods and program evaluation, ensuring graduates can critically analyze counseling practices and contribute to evidence-based improvements in mental health services. Students may also choose elective courses such as Play Therapy or Trauma-Informed Practice to further specialize their skills. A final comprehensive examination is required to complete the degree. Overall, this program prepares graduates to become ethical, skilled, and compassionate mental health professionals capable of working in diverse clinical, community, and private practice settings.
