COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling at Southeast Missouri State University is a 60-hour graduate program designed to prepare students for professional licensure and national certification as counselors. The program provides a structured blend of theoretical knowledge, clinical skill development, and supervised practical experience, ensuring that graduates are fully prepared to work in diverse mental health settings such as schools, hospitals, community agencies, private practices, and substance abuse treatment centers. The curriculum begins with foundational courses including Counseling Orientation and Ethics, Developmental Theories, Counseling Theories, and Social and Cultural Aspects of Counseling, which establish a strong understanding of professional standards, human development, and the social influences that affect mental health. Students also develop essential counseling abilities through courses in Counseling Skills, Group Counseling, Career Development, and Assessment in Counseling, which focus on communication techniques, client evaluation, and group facilitation.As the program progresses, students engage in advanced clinical training through courses such as Crisis Intervention and Consultation, Foundations of Mental Health Counseling, Mental Health Systems and Prevention, Psychodiagnostics and Treatment, Marriage and Family Counseling, and Addictions Counseling. These courses equip students with the knowledge needed to assess mental health conditions, develop treatment plans, and provide effective therapeutic interventions for individuals and families facing a wide range of challenges. A major emphasis of the program is experiential learning, where students complete a supervised practicum followed by multiple internship experiences in real clinical environments. These hands-on experiences allow students to apply counseling theories in practice, build clinical confidence, and develop professional competence under expert supervision.Students also complete a research methods course focused on program evaluation, ensuring they can apply evidence-based practices in their future careers. Elective options such as Play Therapy or Trauma-Informed Practice allow for additional specialization. A final comprehensive examination is required for graduation.
