COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration at Southeast Missouri State University is a 36-hour graduate program designed to prepare students for leadership and professional roles within colleges, universities, and other post-secondary education settings. The program emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical application, equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to improve student success, support institutional effectiveness, and contribute to the development of inclusive and well-functioning academic environments. Core courses focus on communication in higher education, foundational principles of the field, student development theories, student affairs practice, and research methods, providing a strong academic base for understanding how higher education institutions operate and serve students. A required internship experience allows students to apply their learning in real-world settings, gaining hands-on experience in administrative and student affairs roles while working closely with professionals in the field. In addition to core requirements, students select electives that allow them to tailor their degree to specific interests such as leadership, legal aspects of higher education, enrollment management, wellness issues, equity and access, campus safety, and current challenges facing higher education institutions.
