COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Studies Education program at Southeast Missouri State University combines a 47-hour professional education component with a 39-hour interdisciplinary major to prepare students for teaching grades 9–12. Students must earn a grade of C or better in all courses, except for ED280, which requires a B. The education coursework focuses on developing strong teaching skills through classes in pedagogy, literacy methods, adolescent development, and working with students with exceptionalities. A major emphasis is placed on hands-on experience, including multiple field experiences and a culminating student teaching placement, supported by a seminar. Students also learn classroom management, instructional strategies, and interventions for diverse learners.The 39-hour major provides a broad foundation across key social studies disciplines. Required courses include U.S. Political Systems, Introduction to Psychology, and American History I and II. Students then select courses across world history, behavioral sciences, economics, geography, and political science, ensuring a well-rounded understanding of social studies content. Additional coursework includes specialized U.S. and world history classes, allowing students to explore topics such as civil rights, global civilizations, and major historical events in depth. A dedicated course on teaching social studies further connects content knowledge with classroom practice.Overall, the program integrates subject-area expertise with professional teaching preparation, equipping graduates with the knowledge, practical experience, and certification requirements needed to become effective secondary social studies educators.
