COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at SEMO prepares future teachers to work effectively in grades 1–6 through a blend of university coursework, field-based experiences, and student teaching in real classrooms. The program emphasizes not only strong academic preparation in core subjects such as literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies, but also the development of practical teaching skills through repeated classroom placements where students observe, assist, and eventually lead instruction. Early in the program, candidates are introduced to the foundations of education, child development, and classroom environments, which help them understand how children learn and how to create supportive, inclusive learning spaces. As they progress, they move into more advanced methods courses such as literacy instruction, differentiated teaching strategies, classroom management, and assessment techniques, all designed to prepare them for the diverse needs of elementary learners. Technology integration is also a major focus, ensuring future educators can effectively use digital tools and instructional technologies in modern classrooms. Field experiences and advanced practicum courses allow students to apply theory directly in school settings, gradually building confidence and professional competence under supervision. The program also includes coursework in psychology, special education, and multicultural education, helping teachers understand student behavior, learning differences, and cultural diversity. In addition, students are required to complete a full student teaching semester, which serves as the capstone experience and provides full-time classroom responsibility. Supporting coursework in biology, economics, physical science, communication, and U.S. history ensures that graduates have a broad liberal arts foundation. Students may also select elective courses aligned with their interests, such as autism studies, TESOL, fine arts, or psychology. Overall, the program is designed to produce well-rounded, reflective, and highly qualified educators who are prepared to meet the challenges of today’s elementary classrooms and support the academic and social growth of all learners.
