COURSE CURRICULUM

The Science Elementary Education program at SEMO prepares future teachers for certification in elementary classrooms while also equipping them to teach middle school science (grades 5–9), offering strong flexibility across grade levels. Admission to the Educator Preparation Program is required before students can enroll in upper-level education courses, ensuring they are academically and professionally prepared for advanced teacher training. The program combines structured professional education coursework with science content courses and extensive field-based experiences in real classrooms. Students complete a sequence of education courses focused on child development, instructional strategies, literacy instruction, classroom management, assessment, and differentiated instruction, all of which are essential for effective teaching in diverse elementary settings. A strong emphasis is placed on literacy and disciplinary literacy, helping future teachers support reading and writing across science and other subject areas. In parallel, students complete science content coursework in biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, and astronomy, ensuring they have a solid foundation in the subjects they will teach. Methods courses such as Techniques of Teaching Science and interdisciplinary instruction courses prepare candidates to deliver inquiry-based, hands-on science lessons that engage young learners and promote critical thinking. Field experiences are embedded throughout the program, including literacy and content field placements where students gradually move from observation to active teaching roles in real classrooms. These experiences help bridge theoretical knowledge with practical classroom application. The program also emphasizes instructional technology, preparing future teachers to integrate digital tools and resources into science instruction. Additional coursework in psychology, communication, history, and social sciences provides a broad academic foundation and supports interdisciplinary teaching. The program culminates in a full-time student teaching experience, where candidates demonstrate their readiness to independently manage a classroom.
