COURSE CURRICULUM

The Elementary Education program at SEMO is structured to prepare future teachers for certification in elementary classrooms by combining professional education coursework, mathematics content knowledge, and extensive field-based experiences. Before entering upper-division education courses, students must be admitted to the Educator Preparation Program, which ensures they are academically prepared for the demands of teacher training. Once admitted, students complete a sequence of required professional education courses focused on child development, literacy instruction, classroom management, instructional technology, differentiated instruction, and assessment practices. These courses are designed to build both theoretical understanding and practical teaching skills through continuous engagement with real classroom environments. Field experiences such as EL314 Literacy Field Experience, EL350 Content Field Experience, and EL430 Advanced Field Experience allow students to observe, assist, and gradually lead instruction under supervision in elementary school settings. The program places strong emphasis on literacy development through courses such as emergent literacy, disciplinary literacy, and literacy methods for elementary teachers, ensuring candidates are well-prepared to support reading and writing across all subject areas. Mathematics preparation is also a central component, including coursework in numbers and operations, geometry, precalculus, probability and statistics, and foundations of mathematical thinking, alongside methods courses that focus on effective math instruction for young learners. Additional coursework in science, social studies, communication, psychology, and cultural studies ensures that future teachers have a broad academic foundation and can integrate multiple subjects into classroom instruction. Technology integration is embedded throughout the curriculum, preparing students to use digital tools and assistive technologies in modern, inclusive classrooms. The program culminates in a full-time student teaching experience (EL480), where candidates take full responsibility for classroom instruction and demonstrate readiness for certification. Overall, the program develops reflective, skilled, and well-rounded educators capable of meeting the academic and developmental needs of diverse elementary learners.
