COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed.) in Chemistry Education at Southeast Missouri State University combines 47 hours of professional education coursework with 37–39 hours of chemistry-focused study to prepare students for certification as high school chemistry teachers. The program emphasizes both strong subject knowledge and effective teaching skills, ensuring graduates are ready for the classroom.The Education Courses focus on teaching theory, pedagogy, and real-world classroom experience. Students begin with foundational courses like Introduction to Education as a Profession and progress through methods-based courses such as Techniques of Teaching Science and multiple pedagogy classes. They also study adolescent development and special education to better support diverse learners. Field experiences are integrated throughout the program, culminating in a full semester of Student Teaching, where students apply their skills in actual school settings. A minimum grade of C is required in most education courses, with a higher standard for select foundational classes.The Chemistry Education Major provides a strong scientific foundation. Students complete advanced coursework in General Chemistry II, Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry with lab, and Biochemistry. These courses ensure a deep understanding of chemical principles. Supporting coursework in physics and scientific reasoning strengthens analytical and problem-solving abilities.
