COURSE CURRICULUM

The Wildlife Conservation Biology program at Southeast Missouri State University offers a well-rounded and science-driven curriculum designed to prepare students for careers in conservation, wildlife management, and environmental research, as well as for graduate study. The program begins with foundational biology courses such as Evolution and Ecology, Cell and Organismal Biology, and Genetics, which provide a strong understanding of living systems. Students also complete Career Development in Biology and an experiential learning requirement, gaining hands-on experience through field studies, internships, or research projects.The Wildlife and Conservation option builds specialized knowledge through required courses like General Ecology, Plant Biology, and Zoology. These courses help students understand ecosystems, plant systems, and animal biology in depth. Students then choose advanced courses in areas such as wildlife population management, habitat management, conservation biology, wetland ecology, and wildlife diseases. This flexibility allows them to focus on specific aspects of conservation and environmental science based on their interests.Students also complete upper-level biology electives to broaden their expertise in related areas. In addition, the program includes supporting coursework in non-biology subjects such as geology, geographic information systems (GIS), and statistics. These courses provide important skills in environmental analysis, data interpretation, and spatial mapping, which are essential for modern conservation work.Overall, the program combines strong academic training with practical, field-based experience. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in wildlife conservation agencies, environmental consulting, natural resource management, and ecological research, with the skills and knowledge needed to protect and sustain natural ecosystems.
