COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport Management program at Southeast Missouri State University provides a comprehensive curriculum that combines sport industry knowledge, business education, and hands-on professional experience. The core sport management courses cover key areas such as sport and society, governance, ethics, fan behavior and marketing, event management, diversity in sport, and sport-related venue design and operations. Students also study research analysis, global sport systems, legal aspects of sport, and leadership and management within sport organizations, ensuring a strong understanding of how the sports industry operates at both national and international levels.A defining feature of the program is the required 12-credit internship, along with a practicum and professional seminar, which give students extensive real-world experience and help them prepare for careers in the sport industry. Communication skills are also emphasized through oral communication coursework.In addition, students complete a 30-hour Business Administration minor, taking courses in accounting, business law, economics, finance, management, and marketing. This business foundation strengthens their understanding of organizational operations and enhances career and graduate study opportunities.Students may also pursue a Recreation Management track, which includes specialized courses in leisure studies, program planning, group facilitation, and outdoor recreation leadership. Overall, the program blends sport-specific education, business training, and applied experience to prepare graduates for diverse careers in sport management, recreation, and athletic administration.
