COURSE CURRICULUM

The psychology major at Southeast Missouri State University is structured to provide a strong foundation in psychological theory, research, and application while allowing flexibility to explore specialized areas. The required core courses introduce students to the field through topics such as general psychology, career development, ethics and diversity, behavioral statistics, and research methods, along with a course on the historical development of psychology. These courses build essential skills in critical thinking, data analysis, and scientific inquiry.Beyond the core, students complete an extended core of 12 hours by selecting one course from each of four key areas: basic or cognitive processes, clinical or personality psychology, developmental psychology, and social or applied psychology. This ensures a well-rounded understanding of human behavior from multiple perspectives, including how people think and learn, develop across the lifespan, interact socially, and experience mental health and personality differences.Students also choose 6 hours of psychology electives, allowing them to explore topics such as industrial-organizational psychology, cross-cultural psychology, health psychology, psychotherapy, or sensation and perception. Opportunities for independent research and field experience provide practical, hands-on learning that enhances academic knowledge.Additionally, students may opt for a Pre-Counseling track, which removes the need for a minor and focuses on courses related to counseling, trauma, family systems, and clinical psychology. Overall, the program combines foundational knowledge, research experience, and specialized coursework to prepare students for careers or further study in psychology and related fields.
