COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology Pre-Physician Assistant (Pre-PA) program at Southeast Missouri State University is structured to provide both strong scientific preparation and the academic prerequisites required for admission into competitive physician assistant (PA) programs. The curriculum begins with foundational biology courses such as Evolution and Ecology, Cell and Organismal Biology, and Genetics, which build a solid understanding of life sciences. Students also complete Career Development in Biology and gain hands-on experience through an experiential learning requirement that may include internships, field studies, research, or other applied activities.A key component of the Pre-PA option is the focus on human biology and healthcare-related sciences. Required courses such as Anatomy and Physiology I and II with labs are essential for understanding the human body and are commonly required for PA school admission. Students then complete biology electives, allowing them to deepen their knowledge in advanced topics, with an emphasis on upper-level coursework. An alternative pathway includes studying microorganisms and their relationship to human health, further strengthening clinical understanding.In addition, students select upper-level courses from biology, environmental science, or related fields to broaden their scientific background. The program also includes important non-biology requirements such as General Chemistry II, Organic Chemistry, Medical Terminology, advanced mathematics, and lifespan psychology. These courses help students develop the scientific, analytical, and patient-care knowledge necessary for healthcare professions.Overall, the program combines rigorous coursework with practical experience, ensuring students are well-prepared for PA school applications. Along with the required academic preparation, students are encouraged to gain extensive clinical experience outside the classroom, as most PA programs require significant hands-on healthcare hours. This comprehensive approach positions graduates for success in pursuing a Master of Medical Science and a career as a physician assistant.
