COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics Education program combines a strong foundation in physics with comprehensive teacher preparation, requiring 47 hours of education courses and a 59–62 hour major with no minor required. Students must earn at least a grade of C in all education courses, except for ED280, which requires a B or better. The education component includes courses such as Introduction to Education, psychology of exceptional children, adolescent development, and multiple pedagogy and teaching methods classes focused on middle and high school instruction. Field experiences are a major part of the program, culminating in an extensive student teaching placement, ensuring graduates gain real classroom experience and instructional confidence.The physics major builds core scientific knowledge through courses like General Physics I and II, Experimental Methods, Modern Physics, and Scientific Reasoning. Students also take interdisciplinary electives in areas such as ecology, environmental science, biology, chemistry, and geoscience, broadening their scientific perspective. Additional flexibility is provided through upper-level electives in physics and engineering topics, including mechanics, optics, quantum mechanics, electronics, and energy, allowing students to tailor their expertise. The program also integrates computer science and engineering options, such as programming, circuit analysis, and embedded systems, ensuring graduates are comfortable with modern technological tools.Mathematics is a key component, with required coursework in Calculus I, II, and III, strengthening analytical and problem-solving skills essential for both physics and teaching. Overall, this program prepares students to become effective physics educators by combining deep subject knowledge, practical teaching experience, and interdisciplinary exposure, equipping them to teach complex scientific concepts while engaging students and integrating modern technology into the classroom.
