COURSE CURRICULUM

The TV and Film program at SEMO is a 45-hour major designed to prepare students for careers in television, film, video production, broadcasting, and digital media by combining creative storytelling with technical production training and media analysis. The core curriculum provides a strong foundation in Media and Society, Digital Media Production, Media Analytics, Media Diversity, Media History, and Media Law. These courses help students understand how media industries operate, how audiences engage with content, and how legal, ethical, and cultural factors influence television and film production. Students also complete elective coursework that allows them to explore specific interests within media production and storytelling.The required option courses focus heavily on hands-on production experience across multiple areas of the television and film industry. Students begin with Basic TV and Film Production and advance into Video Postproduction, Screenwriting, Television Directing, and Sports Broadcast Production. They also develop advanced skills in Advanced Film Production and Advanced Video Production, gaining experience in both creative development and technical execution. These courses prepare students to work in professional production environments, from scripting and directing to editing and final distribution.A key feature of the program is its emphasis on real-world, industry-style learning. Students gain practical experience in sports broadcast production, including work similar to professional live production environments. They also build strong storytelling and technical skills that prepare them for careers in film sets, television studios, and digital media production companies.The program also includes a support course in mathematics or statistics, such as mathematical reasoning and modeling or statistical reasoning, which helps students interpret data and understand audience metrics in modern media environments.Overall, the program blends creativity, technical production skills, storytelling, and media analysis. Graduates are prepared for careers in television production, film directing, video editing, screenwriting, broadcasting, sports media, and digital content creation across entertainment, corporate, and media industries.
