COURSE CURRICULUM

The Multimedia Journalism program at SEMO is a 45-hour major designed to prepare students for careers in journalism, digital media, broadcasting, and multimedia storytelling by developing strong skills in writing, visual communication, audio and video production, and media analysis. The core curriculum provides a foundation in Media and Society, Digital Media Production, Media Analytics, Media Diversity, Media History, and Media Law, helping students understand how media functions, how audiences engage with content, and how legal, ethical, and cultural factors shape journalism today. Students also complete elective coursework that allows them to explore specialized interests within media production and storytelling.The required option courses emphasize hands-on, applied learning in professional media production. Students gain experience through Arrow Lab and develop skills in media news reporting, media design, audio production, visual production, strategic writing, media storytelling, and media management. These courses train students to create compelling journalistic content across multiple platforms, combining creativity with technical production skills and editorial decision-making.The program also includes a support course in mathematics or statistics, such as mathematical reasoning and modeling or statistical reasoning, which strengthens students’ ability to interpret data, analyze audience trends, and support evidence-based journalism. This analytical foundation is increasingly important in modern media environments where data-driven storytelling plays a key role.Overall, the program blends storytelling, media production, critical thinking, and technical skills to prepare students for a rapidly evolving journalism industry.
