COURSE CURRICULUM

The Marine Biology program at Southeast Missouri State University offers a comprehensive and science-intensive curriculum that prepares students for careers in marine research, conservation, and environmental management, as well as for graduate study. The program begins with core biology courses such as Evolution and Ecology, Cell and Organismal Biology, and Genetics, which provide a strong foundation in life sciences. Students also complete Career Development in Biology and an experiential learning requirement, which may include internships, field studies, or research, helping them gain practical, hands-on experience.The Marine Biology option builds on this foundation with specialized courses including General Ecology, Marine Biology, and Marine Ecology and Conservation. Students also study Zoology and Invertebrate Zoology, which are essential for understanding marine organisms and ecosystems. In addition, students complete upper-level biology electives to further explore areas of interest, with at least one course required at a marine research facility such as the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory or a comparable institution. This requirement ensures valuable real-world exposure to marine environments and research practices.Supporting coursework in chemistry, physics, mathematics, and earth sciences strengthens students’ scientific and analytical skills. Requirements include General Chemistry I and II with labs, Organic Chemistry, Oceanography, Probability and Statistics, and Physical Concepts with lab. These subjects provide the interdisciplinary knowledge needed to study complex marine systems and environmental processes.Overall, the program combines rigorous academic training with field-based learning and research opportunities. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in environmental consulting, wildlife and marine conservation, government agencies, or for pursuing advanced degrees in marine biology and related fields.
