COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Geographic Information Science (GIS) at Southeast Missouri State University is a 78-hour major designed to prepare students for careers in geospatial technology, spatial data analysis, and computer-based mapping systems. The program combines geography, computer science, and data analysis to help students understand how geographic information is collected, processed, analyzed, and applied to real-world problems across environmental science, business, public safety, and government planning.The curriculum begins with foundational coursework in physical and cultural geography, geology, and introductory programming. These courses help students build a strong understanding of Earth systems, human-environment relationships, and basic computing skills needed for geospatial work. Students then progress into specialized GIS training through core courses such as Geographic Information Science I and II, spatial analysis, and database systems, which develop their ability to manage and analyze large geographic datasets.A key strength of the program is its focus on applied geospatial technologies. Students gain hands-on experience with remote sensing, advanced GIS applications, and spatial modeling tools used in professional settings. These skills allow them to create maps, analyze spatial patterns, and support decision-making in areas such as environmental management, urban planning, agriculture, and emergency response.Students also strengthen their analytical and quantitative skills through coursework in statistics and data reasoning. Elective options allow specialization in areas such as precision agriculture, emergency response planning, policing in the information age, and advanced geography topics, providing flexibility to align studies with career goals.Practical experience is an important part of the program, with opportunities for internships and applied GIS projects. These experiences help students connect classroom learning to real-world challenges and build professional skills in teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.Graduates of the GIS program are prepared for careers as GIS analysts, geospatial data specialists, cartographers, environmental consultants, urban planners, and emergency management specialists.
