The Bachelor of Science in Game Development at Southeast Missouri State University is a 78-hour major designed to prepare students for careers in the creation of interactive digital media, including video games, simulations, and immersive applications. The program integrates computer science, mathematics, digital art, storytelling, and user experience design to develop both technical proficiency and creative innovation in game design and development.Students begin with foundational coursework in computer programming, discrete structures, and computer science principles, which build the logical and analytical skills needed for software development. As they progress, they study specialized areas such as game theory, game programming, algorithms, databases, and software engineering, all of which support the development of complex, efficient, and scalable game systems.A strong emphasis is placed on hands-on game creation. Courses like Game Programming I and II, Rapid Game Prototyping, and Mixed Reality Game Development with Human-Computer Interaction allow students to design, build, and refine playable games using professional tools and industry-standard game engines. Students also explore advanced topics such as machine learning, data mining, and artificial intelligence, which are increasingly used to enhance gameplay experiences and adaptive systems.The program also integrates creative and artistic development through courses in visual storytelling, 3D production, digital media, and advanced creative writing. These courses help students develop compelling narratives, immersive environments, and engaging character designs that strengthen the overall player experience. User research and educational game development courses further ensure students understand how players interact with games and how design choices affect usability and engagement.Students complete a capstone project where they work in teams to develop a fully functional game, simulating real-world industry production pipelines.
