COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Exceptional Child Education at SEMO for Mild/Moderate Cross-Categorical Special Education prepares future teachers to work with K–12 students who have a wide range of learning, behavioral, and developmental needs across multiple disability categories. This cross-categorical approach equips educators with flexible, research-based teaching strategies that can be applied in inclusive classrooms as well as specialized settings. The program focuses on helping students develop the skills needed to support academic growth, social-emotional development, and behavioral success for learners with exceptional needs.A major strength of the program is its integration of extensive professional education coursework with hands-on field experiences. Students complete multiple field-based placements in elementary, middle, and secondary school environments, allowing them to gradually transition from observation to full instructional responsibility. These experiences help future teachers develop classroom management skills, individualized instruction techniques, and the ability to collaborate effectively with families, specialists, and other educators. The program also emphasizes the use of instructional and assistive technology to support diverse learners in modern classrooms.The curriculum includes specialized coursework in assessment, behavior management, learning disabilities, language development, and instructional strategies for students with exceptionalities. Students also study literacy instruction, mathematics remediation, and content-area teaching strategies designed for learners with special needs. Courses in diversity, educational law, and child development provide a strong foundation for understanding the broader social and legal context of special education.Students are required to complete advanced field experiences in both elementary and secondary settings, culminating in a full student teaching experience where they demonstrate readiness to manage and instruct a classroom independently. The program also includes coursework that allows candidates to earn an additional certification in Elementary Education (grades 1–6), increasing career flexibility.Overall, the degree prepares graduates to become highly skilled, adaptable special education teachers capable of serving diverse learners across K–12 settings while promoting inclusion, equity, and academic success.
