COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Special Education at SEMO prepares future educators to work with children with exceptional learning needs from early childhood through elementary school settings, combining specialized special education training with coursework aligned to elementary education certification. The program is designed for students who want to support inclusive learning environments and provide individualized instruction for children with developmental, behavioral, and learning differences. Students gain a strong foundation in child development, literacy instruction, curriculum design, assessment, and classroom management while also learning evidence-based strategies for teaching students with disabilities.A major strength of the program is its integration of extensive field-based learning experiences. Students participate in multiple classroom placements where they observe, assist, and eventually lead instruction under the guidance of certified mentor teachers. These experiences include early childhood fieldwork as well as advanced placements in elementary and special education settings, ensuring progressive skill development. The program culminates in a full student teaching experience in an exceptional child education setting, allowing candidates to apply their knowledge in real classrooms for an extended period.The curriculum includes specialized courses in assessment, behavior management, language development, instructional strategies, and intervention techniques for students with mild to moderate disabilities. Students also study family collaboration, inclusive education practices, and approaches for supporting literacy and math development in learners with exceptional needs. Courses in educational technology, diversity in schools, and educational law further prepare candidates for professional responsibilities in modern educational environments.In addition, students complete foundational coursework in child development, biology, communication, mathematics for educators, and social sciences, ensuring a well-rounded academic background. The program also includes requirements that support eligibility for add-on certification in Elementary Education (grades 1–6), expanding career opportunities.Overall, the degree prepares graduates to become highly qualified special education teachers who can effectively support diverse learners, collaborate with families, and promote inclusive education in early childhood and elementary school settings.
