COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science with a Biogeotechnology option at SEMO is a 88–92 hour program designed to prepare students to address complex environmental challenges through an interdisciplinary approach that combines biology, chemistry, geology, geography, and technology. The program builds a strong scientific foundation through core coursework in evolution and ecology, cell and organismal biology, environmental biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and statistics. Students also study environmental law and ethics, gaining an understanding of the regulatory and moral frameworks that guide environmental decision-making and sustainability efforts. Laboratory components and seminar courses are integrated throughout the curriculum, ensuring students develop both theoretical knowledge and practical scientific skills.A key strength of the program is its emphasis on applied learning and real-world experience. Students are required to complete seminars that introduce current environmental issues and scientific research methods, helping them develop critical thinking and communication skills. Field-based and lab-based courses allow students to directly engage with environmental data, ecosystems, and analytical techniques used in professional settings. Opportunities for internships or independent research further enhance hands-on learning and prepare students for careers in environmental science and related fields.The Biogeotechnology option provides specialized training in areas that integrate biology and technology to solve environmental problems. Coursework includes genetics, ecology, environmental soil science, environmental chemistry, hydrology, and geographic information systems (GIS). Students also gain technical skills in computer applications and data analysis, which are essential for modern environmental research and decision-making.
