COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics Mechanical Engineering program at SEMO is an ABET-EAC accredited engineering degree that integrates physics, mathematics, and mechanical engineering principles to prepare students for solving complex engineering problems in real-world settings. The program is structured to build a strong foundation in both theoretical science and applied engineering, with core coursework in physics, engineering mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, and systems analysis. Students begin with fundamental courses such as introduction to engineering, circuit analysis, statics, dynamics, and mechanics of materials, which develop their understanding of how physical systems behave under different conditions. As they progress, they study advanced topics including thermodynamics, signals and systems, control systems, electromagnetics, modern physics, and experimental methods, all of which strengthen their analytical and problem-solving abilities. The program also emphasizes hands-on learning through laboratory work and a two-semester capstone design sequence, where students work on real engineering projects that require teamwork, innovation, and practical application of engineering concepts. The mechanical applications option further deepens expertise in areas such as mechanical design, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and numerical methods, preparing students for careers in industries like aerospace, automotive, energy, manufacturing, and construction. A strong mathematics sequence—including calculus, differential equations, and probability and statistics—supports the technical rigor of the program and enables students to model and analyze complex engineering systems effectively. Additional coursework in chemistry, engineering economics, and design processes provides a broader understanding of engineering practice and decision-making. Because the program is ABET accredited, it meets nationally recognized standards and prepares students for professional licensure, including eligibility to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Overall, the program equips graduates with strong technical knowledge, design skills, and adaptability needed for successful engineering careers or advanced graduate study.
